Pallet guide

Grade A vs. Grade B pallets

Recycled 48x40 pallets are usually sold as Grade A or Grade B (sometimes called #1 and #2). Both are inspected and reusable — the difference is how much wear and repair they show, which affects appearance and price more than basic function.

Grade A pallets

Grade A is the premium recycled pallet: clean, structurally solid, and close to like-new. They have been repaired as needed, with no missing boards, minimal stringer repairs (plugs), and a consistent look from pallet to pallet.

  • Best for: customer-facing shipments, retail and grocery, store-door delivery, and any load where appearance matters.
  • Consistent size and color, inspection-ready.
  • Costs more than Grade B but less than new.

Grade B pallets

Grade B is the workhorse: structurally sound and fully usable, but with more visible wear — older boards, more repairs or stringer plugs, and a rougher overall look. They ship product reliably; they just are not as pretty.

  • Best for: internal use, warehouse-to-warehouse, recurring freight, and cost-sensitive shipping.
  • Lowest cost reusable option.
  • Strength is comparable for normal loads; the trade-off is cosmetic.

Which grade should you buy?

If the pallet will be seen by a customer or retailer, or you need a uniform look, choose Grade A. If it is for internal moves or you are optimizing cost on high volume, Grade B usually wins. Many operations mix both — Grade A for outbound, Grade B in the back. When in doubt, tell us the load and we will point you to the right grade.

Questions

  • Is a Grade B pallet weaker than Grade A?Not meaningfully for normal loads — both are inspected and reusable. The difference is mostly appearance and the amount of prior repair, not basic strength.
  • What does "stringer plug" mean?A plug (or companion stringer) is a repair where a cracked stringer is reinforced. Grade A pallets have few or none; Grade B may have several.
  • Do you stock both grades?Yes — our standard inventory is 48x40 in both Grade A and Grade B. Send your quantity and use and we will quote the right one.
