How much weight can a pallet hold?

Three kinds of load rating

A pallet does not have one capacity — it has three, from highest to lowest:

• Static load — the most a pallet holds sitting still on a solid floor (the highest figure).
• Dynamic load — the most it holds while being moved by a forklift or pallet jack.
• Racking (edge) load — the most it holds supported only on its edges in racking, with nothing under the middle (the lowest figure).

Typical 48x40 capacities

As a general guide, a standard 48x40 wood pallet handles roughly 5,000–7,000 lb static, around 2,500–3,000 lb dynamic, and about 2,000–2,800 lb racked. Treat these as ballpark ranges, not guarantees — the real number depends on the specific pallet, and a new heavy-duty build can exceed them.

What changes the capacity

The same footprint can carry very different loads depending on:

• Construction — block pallets and more or thicker deck boards carry more than a light stringer pallet.
• Wood and condition — species, board quality, and wear; a worn used pallet holds less than new.
• How the load sits — weight spread evenly carries better than a concentrated point load.
• Support — fully supported on the floor beats spanning across racking beams.

Matching the pallet to the load

For light, floor-stacked loads, a standard 48x40 is usually plenty. For heavy product or anything going into racking, do not guess — tell us the weight, how the pallet will be handled, and whether it will be racked, and we will match the right grade or build a custom pallet engineered to the rating you need.
